“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?” – Psalm 22:1
David felt a sense of spiritual desertion from God, where it seemed to Him that God withdrew Himself from him. Was it the grief and terror that he was experiencing made God seem so far away? Jesus cried, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" when He was on the cross. He felt the same spiritual desertion from God. Was it our Sin that He bore for us on the cross made Him felt this separation from God?
In both scenarios, one thing is sure – David and Jesus exercised their spiritual senses in which they came to the realization of this distance they had with God. Similarly, there are instances that our daily struggles and experiences give us a sense of separation of God. We are alerted in the same way as David and Jesus was, through the use of our spiritual senses.
The cry, “Why is everything so wrong? Are You with me?” does not imply that a lack of faith, spiritual maturity or weak foundation. It reveals a need to be near God, feeling His presence.
I have been feeling this desert for the longest time. I understand that I'm feeling this way because of my desire to be near Him, not because of my weaknesses.
